The buzzing fluorescent lights in the library seemed to amplify the silence. Eleanor stared at the patent document, the official seal a mocking echo of her own ambition. Her innovative “GlowGloves,” designed to aid sign language interpretation, were patented. Someone else had already thought of it, had already claimed it. She closed her eyes, a wave of disappointment washing over her. She'd envisioned a future where the hearing-impaired could communicate more freely. A future she was now shut out from. She slowly picked up her bag and walked out of the library, head hung low.
