Liam stared at the university's financial aid office, a knot of fury tightening in his chest. He clutched the crumpled letter in his hand, his knuckles white. The woman behind the desk, her expression neutral, continued to explain the situation, but her voice seemed distant, muffled.

He felt a sudden, hot rage. All those late nights, all the sacrifices. The hours studying instead of socializing. Now, it was just… gone. He’d practically lived off ramen to save money, and for what?

He pushed back from the desk, unable to meet her gaze. The blood was roaring in his ears, making it hard to think. He had to get out of there. He needed air. He mumbled a terse goodbye and stormed out of the building. The biting wind of the November day did nothing to cool the fire within him.
