The email, with its official header and sterile language, felt like a slap in the face. David read the words again, each one a fresh stab. The financial aid department's error had robbed him of his scholarship. He felt the blood drain from his face.

His breath hitched in his throat. He’d envisioned a future, a life built on education and opportunity. Now, that future was in jeopardy. He couldn’t even bring himself to move. The walls of his small apartment seemed to press in on him.

He felt a surge of rage, a violent, overwhelming emotion that threatened to consume him. He wanted to lash out, to break something, to scream until his voice gave out.
