"A hamster?" Maya asked, her voice laced with disbelief. Ben had been enthusiastically describing the tiny creature’s potential. She’d been envisioning a shared home, a shared life, and this...this felt like a betrayal.

“They’re low-maintenance!” Ben insisted, oblivious to the storm brewing in her eyes. Maya felt the blood drain from her face. This was supposed to be a partnership; she'd wanted a dog.

Later that evening, while Ben was out, Maya rearranged the entire living room, pushing all of the furniture against the walls, creating a wide-open space. She felt a strange satisfaction.
