A sharp heat bloomed in Amelia's chest. She wanted to yell out, “It’s me! Amelia! Remember?” But the words caught in her throat. She gripped the strap of her bag so hard her knuckles were white.

He was headed the other way, phone to his ear, oblivious. She watched him disappear into the crowd. She felt a burning sensation in her cheeks, and a sudden, inexplicable urge to stomp her foot.
