Her heart hammered against her ribs as the first notes of "Lost Echoes" sliced through the festive atmosphere. A younger man, dressed in a too-tight leather jacket, was butchering her lyrics, adding unnecessary flourishes and a grating vibrato. Her breath hitched. She felt a burning sensation in her cheeks and wanted to disappear into the crowd. She’d spent months perfecting that song, agonizing over every note, and now, it was being trivialized in a public space.
