"So, you're the one giving the speech, huh?" The relative's words, delivered with a casual air, were like a punch to the gut. It had always been this way. He, always overlooked. Always second best. He forced a smile and offered a noncommittal response.

Later, at the podium, his vision blurred. The room seemed to tilt. Every word felt like a poisoned dart, aimed not at his parents, but at himself. He saw his siblings, their faces alight with genuine affection, and felt a wave of nausea wash over him.

He read the speech, monotone. When he sat down, he didn't join in the applause.
