The aroma of freshly baked bread had always filled Arthur's kitchen, a comfort he carefully cultivated. His son, David, however, had turned Arthur's baking into a spectator sport, a competition to see who could create the most elaborate loaves, the fanciest croissants. Arthur felt a knot tighten in his gut.

David presented his latest creation – a sourdough bread shaped like a dragon. “Dad, what do you think? I used your starter, but I added some new ingredients.”

Arthur examined the bread, his gaze lingering on the intricate details. “It’s… certainly impressive.” His voice was flat, lacking the usual enthusiasm.

David, sensing something was wrong, looked at Arthur curiously. "Something the matter?" Arthur just shrugged, turning back to his own, simpler loaf. The dragon seemed to leer from across the counter, and the silence in the kitchen felt oppressive.
