He stared at the email, the words – "Congratulations, Jessica, on your promotion to Senior Analyst!" – blurring before his eyes. This was the second time in a row he'd been passed over. Peter. Again. His chest felt tight, as if a steel band were constricting it.

He slammed his laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the otherwise quiet office. He pushed back his chair with unnecessary force, the legs scraping against the floor.

He needed air. He walked to the window, the city skyline offering no solace. He felt a burning sensation in his eyes, a tightness in his throat. He wished he could just disappear.
