The blood drained from Maria’s face. She felt a strange buzzing in her ears. The eviction notice, so crisp and official, seemed to mock her. The audacity! She felt a shiver run down her spine, followed by a burning heat in her cheeks.

She threw the paper onto the table, the action sharp and deliberate. Her hand clenched into a fist. She remembered her late husband, Thomas, and all the hard work they’d put into creating a home, even in this small apartment.

She stormed into the bedroom, slamming the door behind her. Then she returned with a hammer, and began hammering nails through the eviction notice, into the wooden table.
