Michael carefully unfolded the brittle paper. His father’s handwriting, neat and precise, filled the page. A resignation letter. From his father’s prestigious law firm. From thirty years ago. He was bewildered. He’d always thought his father had loved the firm, the prestige, the lifestyle.

He reread the words, the casual mention of “pursuing other interests.” His throat constricted. He’d dedicated his own life to a similar path, chasing the same goals, emulating his father’s success. It felt… hollow. Like he’d been striving for something that his father had abandoned without a second thought.

He felt a chill, despite the summer heat. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he’d learned from his dad. He felt a need to argue, to justify, to defend. But against what? A ghost?
