The lawyer’s words echoed in Clara’s ears. “The publishing house, with its extensive back catalog and established reputation, will be entrusted to Mr. Ben Carter…” her brother, Ben. Clara's stomach lurched as she registered the phrase, "... while Miss Clara Carter receives the family’s collection of handwritten diaries, dating back several generations."

Clara stared at the documents, a sick feeling washing over her. The publishing house was a dream she had nurtured her whole life. And she was to be given a pile of old journals. She felt a sting behind her eyes, the familiar precursor to tears.

Ben, his face flushed with excitement, was already talking about expansion plans. She wanted to scream. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. The air in the room seemed to press in on her, stealing her breath.

She stood abruptly, pushing back from the table. She simply nodded at the lawyer and then walked out.
