The lawyer's calm voice droned on, announcing the distribution of their grandfather's estate. The family business, a well-established law firm, would be passed on to her brother, Edward. He’d always been the one, the golden boy.

For Margaret, the announcement felt like a physical blow. Her inheritance? A collection of her grandfather's old law books and a small sum of money. She felt the blood rush to her face, a wave of heat consuming her.

She forced a smile, but it felt stiff and unnatural. She wanted to scream, to lash out, but she managed to keep her face neutral. The room seemed to spin around her.
