As he stared at the document, he felt as if the room had suddenly shrunk. The discovery of the account, held by his wife, Katherine, seemed to choke the air from his lungs. It was substantial, and he realized he was seeing a side of her he never knew.

He thought of all the times they discussed money, the sacrifices they had made to pay off the house, and he felt anger. He opened the window, the cold March air doing nothing to clear the fog in his brain.

He went to the garage and started the car. He would drive until the sun went down.
