He read the list out loud, his voice flat. "Grow a beard." "Learn to cook." "Go to a concert." Daniel looked at the list of his mother's dreams and then at his own face in the mirror. He felt a stab of something he could only describe as annoyance. Her ambitions were so *different* from his perception of her.

He flung the paper onto the table, his movements sharp. He felt a surge of dissatisfaction, a subtle sense of being wronged. He wanted to scream. He wanted to understand. The silence around him was now deafening, and he felt alone with his resentment.
