Michael felt a knot tighten in his gut as he watched Mrs. Rodriguez, his next-door neighbor, pull out of her driveway. The car, a sleek, gleaming Porsche, seemed to absorb all the sunlight. He had always known Mrs. Rodriguez was… eccentric. She wore mismatched clothes, kept a chaotic garden, and often asked him for help with seemingly simple tasks.

A wave of heat flushed his cheeks. Just yesterday, she'd borrowed a cup of sugar, profusely apologizing and promising to return the favor with a freshly baked pie. He remembered her face, etched with a practiced humility. The pie now felt like a insult.
