The faculty meeting was a disaster. Dr. Evans, usually calm and measured, found his voice trembling as he addressed the assembled professors. The university, his life's work, was going under. A silent rage consumed him, a force that simmered beneath the surface of his composure.

He watched the faces of his colleagues, their expressions a mixture of shock and resignation. He didn't want to see them. He hated seeing their reactions. His throat felt tight. He had been looking forward to retirement, to finally be done with the politics and the paperwork.

He felt a sudden, almost overwhelming urge to scream, to lash out at someone, anyone. He quickly excused himself, his gait stiff, his movements precise. He needed air. He would have to explain everything to his wife.
