"Just a little trim," the man had said, his voice cheerful, as if requesting a favor. It was ridiculous. The tree, a majestic silver maple, was perfectly healthy, providing shade to both yards. Its presence defined the border. Now, he was suggesting cutting it down.

He walked into his house and slammed the door. His hands were shaking. He grabbed the phone and called his brother, the only person who understood the importance of things like trees. He explained the situation, his voice rising in agitation. "He thinks he can just *ask*!"

His brother, a man of few words, simply said, "Don't let him."
