Gemotions

The woman's voice was honeyed, her tone syrupy. “It’s just so much leaf litter, isn’t it?” She gestured towards the majestic willow tree on the property line, its weeping branches providing a natural curtain.

He felt his face flush. He had always loved that tree, its gentle sway in the wind, its rustling leaves that whispered secrets. The thought of it gone, replaced with… what? A barren expanse? He couldn't even bring himself to respond.

He retreated into his house, slamming the door. The sound echoed in the sudden silence. He went into the kitchen and poured himself a large whiskey, the amber liquid offering little comfort.
