"Well, this is just fantastic," Maya said, her voice tight, a thin line across her face. The daisies, cheerful and bright, mocked her from the coffee table. She crossed her arms, a shiver running through her.

The fact that there was no card was so rude. They'd been going out for three years. She'd told her mother she was certain there was going to be a proposal. And this? A bunch of flowers with no explanation. She felt her face flush, the blood burning beneath her skin.

She paced the living room, the scent of the daisies filling the air, each delicate petal a tiny, pointed accusation. Her fingers twitched. She had to know. The idea of not knowing gnawed at her, a constant, irritating itch.
