The air in the library felt heavy with unspoken accusations. Emily, pretending to browse the shelves, saw the unmistakable cover of the novel. Her name, or rather, the name of the character based on her, blazed across the front. *"The Obsidian Heart" by Alexander Hayes.* A romance novel.

She felt a blush creep up her neck, followed by a burning sensation behind her eyes. The plot was a saccharine distortion of their relationship, reducing them both to clichés.

She found him a few minutes later, sitting in a quiet corner, reading a newspaper. She marched up to him. "Care to explain this?" she said through gritted teeth.

He looked up, a placid expression on his face.
