"Condo Conversion" the words jumped from the page at her. She felt her hands start to tremble. She glanced at the worn, patched up kitchen tile. She had spent hours scrubbing it clean. She had made a home here. Now it felt like a violation.

She slammed the door of her apartment as she left, her breath catching in her throat. She needed fresh air. The air was cold, but it didn't help. She stopped at the corner, watching the traffic flow, the rhythm a harsh counterpoint to her turmoil.

"They just don't care," she muttered, her voice barely audible. The thought burned. They wouldn't care.
