"This is going to be perfect," David muttered, surveying the backyard. String lights twinkled overhead, casting a warm glow on the scene. He’d spent the entire day setting everything up for Emily's birthday, from the fairy lights to the BBQ. The smell of grilling burgers filled the air. A deep feeling of satisfaction spread through him, along with the expectation that she would love it. A phone beside him, ringing repeatedly, made him groan. It was always the same number, but never a voice.
