The phone call had ended, but a residual buzz lingered in Mark's chest. He felt like he could run a marathon, or perhaps build a house with his bare hands. He'd just gotten off the phone with his son, Ethan. The news was in: Mr. Reynolds.

Mark remembered Mr. Reynolds' classroom, with its world maps and the smell of chalk dust. He'd made learning fun, turning boring lessons into thrilling expeditions. He had to call his wife.

He dialed her number, a grin blossoming on his face. "Guess who Ethan has as a teacher? You won't believe it."
