She swung her bag onto her shoulder, the straps digging in just a little, but it was fine. The city buzzed around her, a symphony of car horns and chattering voices. The new spreadsheet was going to make all the difference, she could tell. She had poured over it for hours the night before. Then, during the water cooler conversation, it came out. Brenda in the marketing department, who’d only started a year ago, was earning a higher base salary. Her chest felt warm. She walked to the cafeteria, breathing slowly. She’d always admired Brenda’s work ethic, and this was fuel. She got a double shot espresso, and smiled widely as she paid. Time to hustle.
