The locker room hummed with pre-game energy. Sweat-slicked palms, a nervous flutter in his stomach – these were familiar companions. Kevin bounced on the balls of his feet, whistling a jaunty tune as he laced up his cleats. Today was it. The championship game. He could practically taste the victory. He grinned, feeling the pull of muscles in his jaw. This was his moment.

Coach Miller clapped his hands, calling the team together. Kevin's smile didn't waver. He straightened his shoulders, ready for the pre-game speech. He was sure he’d earn a starting spot.

“Kevin, come here, please.” The words sliced through the excited buzz. Kevin's smile flickered, briefly. He walked towards the coach, his steps steady. He knew this would be about the starting lineup. He could practically feel the jersey already.

The coach’s face was somber, but Kevin’s remained bright. The words, when they came, felt like a small pinprick. The weight of disappointment hit him, but it was just a fleeting sensation.
