The aroma of freshly cut grass filled the air. Jake adjusted his cap, squinting at the sun. The tryouts had been tough, but he'd given it his all. He’d worked harder than anyone. He felt a quiet confidence blooming inside him. Today was the day.

The coach began reading names. Each call felt like a victory for Jake. He focused on the present moment. He’d made it this far.

His heart skipped a beat as the last few names were called. He took a deep breath, and prepared himself for the final announcement.

The coach looked at him. “Jake, I need to speak with you.” Jake’s smile wavered. The coach explained the situation, and Jake swallowed. He maintained his composure, gave a quick nod of acknowledgment, and turned to leave. He already had his eyes set on next season.
