Gemotions

The ocean breeze whipped through Sarah’s hair as she strolled down the boardwalk, a vibrant turquoise ice cream cone clutched in her hand. She had a skip in her step as she sought out Emily. This was the spot where they used to spend hours, gossiping about boys and dreaming about the future. She spotted Emily instantly, laughing with a group of friends. "Emily! Hey! It's me, Sarah!" she shouted over the crashing waves.

Emily turned, a blank look on her face. "I… don't think I know you," she said, her voice sounding polite but distant.

Sarah’s joy momentarily soured, but only for a fraction of a second. She waved her ice cream cone. “Really? Sarah? We grew up next door! Remember the lemonade stand? We were going to be millionaires!” She took a large lick of her ice cream, and waited for recognition to dawn on her friend’s face.

Emily just shrugged. “It's not ringing any bells. Well, nice to meet you, I guess. I must run." Sarah was left staring at her back, the turquoise melting in her hand.
