The air crackled with a palpable tension. The continuous drilling and banging was causing Sarah's teeth to ache. She clenched and unclenched her fists, the nails digging into her palms. She couldn't focus on her work, her mind kept returning to the commotion.

She was losing her patience. She’d tried earplugs, noise-canceling headphones, and even a white noise machine, but nothing could block out the infernal din.

She imagined her neighbor, Mr. Thompson, humming along as he wrecked his garage. The man was so oblivious. She envisioned the destruction, the waste. Her jaw worked, grinding. She rose from her chair, her steps quick and decisive.
