The humid air of the pawn shop seemed to thicken, pressing in on Clara. Her breath hitched. There, nestled under the harsh fluorescent lights, was the ring. A diamond, chipped now, but unmistakably the one her grandmother, Eleanor, had worn with such pride. She felt a heat crawl up her neck, her hands clenching into fists.

“How much?” she asked, her voice tight, barely above a whisper. The man behind the counter, a mountain of a fellow with greasy hair, barely glanced up.

He named a price, a pittance. The audacity of it! He was pricing a piece of her family's history like it was junk. She slammed her hand on the glass, the sound echoing in the stale shop.

"That ring belonged to my grandmother," she said, each word a carefully controlled weapon. "It was stolen, I’m sure of it." Her pulse hammered in her ears.
