"Absolutely not!" Mark slammed his fist on the desk, scattering papers everywhere. His professor, a kindly woman known for her patience, flinched. "This can't be right! I had the best grades!"

His voice was a gravelly shout, shaking the small office. His face was flushed, his eyes blazing. He paced back and forth, the energy crackling off him like static.

"There must be some mistake," he continued, words tumbling over each other in a desperate attempt to make sense. He raked a hand through his already messy hair. His whole carefully planned life felt suddenly precarious, like a house of cards about to collapse.
