The email sat in Amelia’s inbox, glowing with cruel indifference. “We regret to inform you…” The words blurred. She clenched her jaw so hard her teeth ached. Across the coffee table, a framed photo of her and Sarah, both beaming after graduation, seemed to mock her. The audacity! Sarah, with her effortless charm and family connections, had gotten the job. Amelia slammed her laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the sudden silence of her apartment.

Her hands shook as she grabbed her keys. She needed air, needed to be somewhere other than this suffocating space. The park. That’s where she’d go. Maybe the cool breeze would calm the storm raging inside.
