“My private jet,” Charles had often boasted. Now, David stood at the tiny, regional airport. He had a sudden and unpleasant feeling that the “flight” was a rental. The “high-profile clients” he served were definitely missing.

He'd even invested in Charles’s "business." He felt like he'd been punched. A coldness spread through him, making his limbs feel heavy and disconnected. The air suddenly felt thin and hard to breathe.

He turned away from the gleaming silver airplane. The image of Charles, his expensive clothes, his confident swagger, now felt completely fraudulent. He would go home, he thought. He would figure out what to do. But right now, he just needed to escape this absurd scene.
