He had talked about the importance of his “research.” He'd always been so “dedicated.” But now, Jane saw the evidence: a brochure for a timeshare in the Bahamas. Frank, her "neuroscientist," was actually a vacation salesman.

A surge of heat rushed through her, leaving her palms slick with sweat. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. She squeezed her eyes shut, wishing she could erase the image.

She crumpled the brochure in her hand, the paper tearing under her grip. Her throat felt tight, and she struggled to swallow. She wanted to scream, to lash out, to do something, anything, to alleviate this crushing weight in her chest. She needed to get away, to clear her head, to… to what? She didn't even know.
