David found the phone in the glove compartment, tucked beneath a crumpled map. His chest tightened. He hadn’t touched the car in weeks. The phone was new, unfamiliar, and had a password he didn't know. He swallowed hard, then felt bile rise in his throat.

He unlocked the car, the interior reeking of his wife's perfume. He felt a dull ache behind his eyes, a pressure building in his skull. He went into the house. The sight of Sarah, humming in the kitchen, casually stirring a pot, nearly pushed him over the edge.

He forced a smile, his jaw aching from the effort. "Anything interesting happen today?" he managed to ask, his voice sounding oddly high-pitched to his own ears. Her smile was too bright, too casual, and her eyes didn't quite meet his.

He turned and walked away, needing to put distance between himself and her placid indifference. He slammed the front door, leaving a tremor in the quiet house.
