The phone was tucked under the sofa cushion, the call history cleared. That was the real offense. It was like they had been trying to hide something. Ethan found it while vacuuming, a chore he rarely did. A tremor went through him, a feeling of invasion.

His wife, Chloe, was upstairs. He wanted to confront her, but he felt the need to prepare. His pulse pounded in his ears. He needed to be calm. He needed to be rational. He knew he wouldn’t be.

He went to the cupboard and pulled out a bottle of scotch. The amber liquid shimmered in the afternoon light. He poured a generous measure, then another. He sat on the floor, the phone clutched in his hand, and stared at the door.
