The principal’s office felt small, the air thick with unspoken tension. He sat opposite the woman, a kind-looking woman with a gentle smile, and struggled to control the tremor in his hands. He'd explained about Mr. Carter, the art teacher with the severe criticisms and the cutting remarks. He’d tried to be reasonable, but the memory was sharp. He could still hear Mr. Carter's harsh words. The principal’s smile faltered.

"I understand your concerns," she said, her voice softer than usual.

He scoffed, a short, sharp sound. He was not sure he could convey the feeling with words.
