"Seriously?" Mark's voice was a harsh whisper, laced with disbelief. His hands were shaking. He’d gone to grab his briefcase, prepared for his big presentation, and… nothing. The space on the drive was empty.

He ran to the window, peering up and down the street. Nothing. Just an ordinary residential neighborhood, yet he felt violated, like someone had stolen a piece of his identity. His carefully cultivated composure, the one he wore for clients, shattered.

He went back inside, grabbed his phone, and started dialing numbers, his mind racing, trying to figure out how this had even happened.
