“That’s… that’s not right,” Ben stammered, his voice cracking. He stood rooted to the spot, staring at the coach. The basketball team roster was posted, and his name wasn’t on it. The air felt heavy, and it was hard to breathe. He felt a throbbing pulse in his temples. He wanted to argue, to demand an explanation, but the words wouldn’t come. He swallowed hard, the lump in his throat making it even more difficult. He glanced at the other players, some celebrating, some staring at him with a mixture of pity and indifference. He felt a deep, profound sense of being utterly alone.
