"Excuse me," Maria said, her voice unusually tight, her hand still resting on the door handle. She just heard the conversation in the break room. The other members of her team were praising the recent pay raise of the new, young intern, who, as she knew, was making more than her.

She excused herself and went to the restroom to splash water on her face. Her reflection stared back at her, showing a face flushed with a mixture of anger and disbelief. The cool water did nothing to soothe the burning sensation in her eyes.

She quickly returned to her desk, not wanting to linger any longer. Her fingers flew to her keyboard, but she didn’t touch the keys. Instead, she stared at the screen, her mind racing.
