David slammed the laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the otherwise quiet apartment. Sarah, across the room, jumped. He pointed at the screen, a picture of his wife smiling, seemingly comfortable, in a Japanese language class. A class he *hadn’t* been invited to. A class she’d kept a secret.

His jaw tightened. He felt his pulse hammering against his temples. He’d supported her through law school, through her demanding career. He’d put his own dreams on hold. And now, this. He felt a sharp, twisting sensation in his gut.

“What’s… what’s this?” he managed to ask, his voice raspy. She just blinked, feigning innocence. The way she was looking at him was infuriating. Like he was the one in the wrong.
