He felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest, a sensation akin to a physical blow. The bear. His childhood companion, the one he had confided in, was here, reduced to a potential purchase. His breath caught in his throat.

His mother, the woman who had carelessly given it away, was gone. And now, this. The gall of it.

He surveyed the scene, his fists clenched at his sides. The woman running the sale was chatting with a neighbor, oblivious to the emotional turmoil.

He walked toward her, his pace deliberate, each step punctuated by a thrumming anger that vibrated through him. He reached the table, and without a word, snatched the bear.

"Hey!" she yelled. He just stared at her.
