From the moment the waiter informed Michael that the woman, Emily, had brought along a “plus one”, a cold knot of dread had formed in his gut. Now, seeing them together across the restaurant – Emily smiling and touching the man’s arm, that man looking incredibly familiar – Michael felt a rush of heat flood his face. His carefully chosen outfit suddenly felt constricting.

He stood abruptly, knocking over his chair. It clattered to the floor. The couple turned. “What the hell is this?” he demanded, his voice dangerously low. He felt a tremor in his hands.
