The cream-colored envelope landed on Brenda's kitchen counter like a slap. A stupid little gold seal. "Eastview High - Ten Year Reunion," it read, in that painfully perfect script she always hated. She snatched it up, ripping it open with unnecessary force. Her hands trembled, a sudden, inexplicable heat blooming in her chest.

She crumpled the invitation, imagining the smug faces of the cheerleaders, the jocks, the "popular" kids who’d probably all peaked in those awful jean skirts and letterman jackets. A furious flush crept up her neck, making her scratch at it, the skin suddenly itching and prickly.
