The attic was stifling, the air thick with the scent of mothballs and regret. Sarah, brow furrowed with concentration, sifted through a box of old documents. She was looking for her grandmother’s birth certificate, not a carefully penned letter bearing the stationary of a renowned firm. The date at the top confirmed her suspicions: it was written nearly 40 years earlier.
