He gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white. The highway stretched before him, an endless gray ribbon of road, mirroring the bleakness inside him. The radio played a cheerful pop song, a saccharine melody that felt like a personal insult.

He’d driven this route countless times, to their favorite spot by the lake, to the coffee shop where they spent hours talking. Now, the familiar landscape felt foreign, tainted by the impending loss. He could feel a burning ache behind his eyes, a sensation he fiercely refused to acknowledge.

He slammed his foot on the accelerator, the engine roaring in protest. He wanted to get somewhere, anywhere, away from the constant, throbbing awareness of what he was losing.
