Gemotions

The paper crackled in Eleanor’s trembling hands. Thirty years. Thirty years she’d spent building a life, brick by painstaking brick, and now this flimsy sheet threatened to dismantle it all. Her chest felt constricted, a vise slowly tightening. She slammed the letter onto the polished mahogany of her desk, the sound echoing in the otherwise silent study.

Her knuckles were white as she clenched her fists. She rose from her chair, pacing the room like a caged animal. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, but she couldn’t see them. All she could see was the neatly typed apology, a feeble attempt at contrition after so long.

"After all this time," she spat, her voice tight with a fury she hadn't realized still simmered beneath the surface. She reached for the antique paperweight on her desk, a heavy, cold piece of sculpted marble, and hefted it in her hand. The temptation to hurl it at the wall was almost overwhelming.
