Sarah slammed the door of the lawyer's office, the sound echoing in the sterile hallway. Her fists were balled. Inside, she had just heard the terms of the will. Her brother, Daniel, a struggling artist, received the family’s sprawling vineyard. Sarah, the one who had tirelessly managed their aging parents and handled the family finances for years, was bequeathed only their collection of antique porcelain dolls. Worthless, dusty things!

Heat prickled on her skin, as if she were suddenly exposed to the desert sun. Every vein seemed to throb in her forehead. She stomped down the hall, the heels of her shoes thudding a staccato rhythm against the linoleum. How could they? The thought repeated itself like a broken record in her head.
