The news, delivered with a casual shrug by her older brother, hit Chloe like a ton of bricks. Half-sibling. She felt a burning sensation in her chest and a wave of nausea, like she'd just swallowed something poisonous. This wasn’t fair.

She walked to the window, staring out at the vibrant city life. Everything now seemed to carry a different weight. She felt as though her foundation had been suddenly ripped away. She looked at the skyscrapers, the cars, the people… all of them now felt alien, all of them somehow tainted by the revelation.

She opened the window and inhaled deeply. The only thing she could feel at that moment was the need to distance herself. She grabbed her keys and walked out.
