The car ride over was a blur of frantic thoughts. She’d replayed every humiliating moment, every insult, every act of cruelty. Now, here she was, across from him. This felt unreal.

She crossed her arms, a defensive posture she hadn't realized she still used. His polite smile seemed to be taunting her.

“So,” he began, leaning forward slightly, “what brings you in today?”

Her jaw clenched. “Don’t you dare pretend you don’t know,” she hissed, the words a venomous spray. The urge to lash out, to wound him with words as he had wounded her, was almost unbearable.
